Book Description
Foreword
WITHOUT the help given by several benefactors this dictionary could not have been published. وتأتي عَلَى قَدْرِ الكرام المكارم in other words 'great gifts are from great men'. In its initial stages the draft of the English text was prepared by a team who selected head-words and examples of usage from my Oxford Eng-lish-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage, published in 1972. The senior member of the team, Mrs W. K. Davin, checked the whole of the draft which was passed to Mrs L. Lyons who typed it, added the phonetic equivalents and, in consultation with me, revised both the scope and the consistency of treatment of the English. S. Khulusi, N. Shamaa and I took about a third of this English text each and pencilled in the Arabic which was largely drawn from the 1972 dictionary. This draft was completed in March 1978 and while methods of printing were being explored, it was subjected to close editorial scrutiny and revision by Shamaa and myself. Typesetting was begun early in 1979. The arrangement was that an English firm would cope with the English, while Munir Abdelnoor had overall responsibility for setting the Arabic. The Arabic text was set and then proof-read by Musa Bishuti both for the vowelling and for the sense. Shamaa and I re-checked the text at this stage and then Abdel-noor supervised the pasting up and layout of the double column pages on which Musa Bishuti entered the vowels. In the final stage Shamaa and I re-checked and, where necessary, corrected the master camera ready copy. What merits this dictionary may have, spring from the meticulous care lavished on the work in each of its stages by the fellow workers whom I have named. As for the demerits, responsibility for which rests on my shoulders, may I ask for the user's indulgence.

Preface
THE Concise Oxford English-Arabic Dictionary of Current Usage, a shortened and up-dated form of the 1972 Oxford English Arabic Dic-tionary, is designed to meet the needs both of the Arabic speaker who is learning English and of the English speaker who is learning Arabic. The increased pace of language change in recent times has been reflected in the media and the editor has been at pains to record the different levels of usage met with in newspapers, radio and television as well as film. Where familiar, colloquial and slang levels are indicated the major Arabic dialectal equivalents have been given. The special needs of the Arabic speaker are catered for by the inclusion of phonetic equivalents for head-words, phrases illustrating unexpected and often baffling idioms, as well as succinct explanations of head-words denoting con-cepts new in the Arab world. To assist the English speaker vowels and diacritical markings have been included in the Arabic text, also irregular plurals of nouns and guidance on how the simple verb is conjugated in the imperfect tense. Special attention has been given to the layout which is so organized that English head-words are easy to find and subdivisions of meaning clearly differentiated.
