Khushwant Singh who is the most controversial living author in India is really the most fascinating man and a unique personality. It is very easy to pass hearsay comments and concoct controversies buy very difficult to prove them and most difficult to find and like the excellence of a man. I have never meet Khushwant Singh but those who have, are never tired of talking of his warmth, generosity and hospitality. Dr. V.A. Shahane who has written a very encouraging Foreward of my book E.M. Forster: The Theory and Practice of His Novels (1980) and whose highly penetrating and useful critical book Khushwant Singh published by Twayne Publishers, Inc. New York 1972 is the only available best book to understand the literary genius of Khushwant, acknowledges with a sense of gratitude, "I spent a pleasant evening with him in Bombay, and he impressed me greatly as an amiable, witty and generous man."
The present book Khushwant Singh as a Novelist by Dr. Ranjan Kumar who is gifted with a sound critical sense and literary sensibility, is really a comprehensive criticism on all his novels. Dr. Shahane's critical book Khushwant Singh came in 1972 and Mr. Singh's two novels Delhi and The Company of Woman came in 1990 and 1999 respectively, and hence Dr. Ranjan's book certainly compensates the shortage of critical materials on these two interesting autobiographical novels. His thematic analysis with suitable and highly expressive sub titles on each of Mr. Singh's novels and his literary evaluations are brilliant and thorough.
Dr. Ranjan has done a very good and inspiring job by analyzing Khushwant Singh's different modes of Characterization with detailed textual illustrations. His study of imagery and style including with and humour is superb. I trust with confidence that Dr. Ranjan's painstaking critical book will help the readers and scholars of Khushwant Singh in their further research if they wish to study his art and vision in greater depth in his novels.
