Preface In commemoration of Dr L K Ananthakrishna Iyer, the Anthro- pological Survey of India proposed to bring out a Special Number of its home journal, Human Science on the occasion of his 125th birth anniversary. Accordingly, contributions were invited from some leading scholars in the field and from the associates of Dr Iyer. We are happy to put on record that although due to prior engagements it has not been possible for all the invitees to contribute articles in rather a short notice, they all appreciated the idea of bringing out a Special Number of Human Science to pay our homage to this pioneer of Ethnography in India.
