For a casual observer of the world map, Nepal, a tiny Himalayan kingdom nesting on the lap of the Great Himalayan ranges, may be lost between the vast lands of Indian sub-continent and the giant China. Nepal, the abode of twelve million simple, hardy, content, and peace-loving people, has, nevertheless, a very glorious past. Nepal claims her own dignified place with her ancient tradition and culture second to none. However, Nepal's significance is conveniently obliterated by the outside world in their glaring sublimity of scientific advancement and economic development. Nepal, an independent and sovereign nation on her own merit, preferred poverty
backwardness and a series of struggles to losing her independence and sovereignty. Nepal was so much attached to the Aryan culture and civilisation that she made many sacrifices to pre-serve it.
Small, yet docile, Nepal clashed many a time against the colonial ambition of the then British Empire. She stood firmly and resolutely to safeguard her independence even though she had to pay dearly for it. For the same cause, Nepal also fought with the Chinese Empire against heavy odds. All those heroic and laudable deeds of Nepal, the crest-jewel of the Himalayan states, richly deserved appreciation and these amply qualify her to be a proud, exalted and distinguished nation, though week in size backward in economic and scientific development.
Flanked by two giants of Asia-India on the south and the People's Republic of China on the north-Nepal is a Hindu nation situated on the southern slopes of the Central Himalayas. Nepal occupied today a very significant position in the world politics.
Geographically, Nepal is a transitional mountain area between the Indo-Gangetic plain, green and fertile and the Tibetan Plateau, arid and husky. Bounded on the north by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, the kingdom of Nepal has an average length of about eight hundred kilometres and two hundred and ten kilometres of breadth. Its total area is 141,577 square kilometres. It lies between the longitude 80.15 to 88 East and the latitude 26.15 to 30.30 North. It has a population a little over twelve millions. India is 22 times big-ger in size and 44 times larger in population. China is 75 times bigger in size and 70 times larger in population.
