भूमिका शिवपुरी जिला बौद्ध संपदा से धनी है। शिवपुरी जिले के राष्ट्रीय माधव उद्यान में चुरैल छाज स्थान पर तीसरी सदी ईसा पूर्व के धम्मलिपि के पुरा शिलालेख की उपस्थिति जिले को भारत के नक्शे पर विशेष बनाती है। जिले में तीसरी सदी ईसा पूर्व के पुरालेख के अलावा जिले की कोलारस तहसील के कोटा ग्राम से पाँचवी-छठी ईसवीं की भगवान बुद्ध की विशाल मूर्ति भी प्राप्त हुई है जो वर्तमान में ग्वालियर स्थित गूजरी महल, पुरातत्व संग्रहालय में संरक्षित रखी हुई है। तहसील खनियाधाना स्थित ग्राम राजापुर बुधोन में नौवीं दसवीं सदी का प्रस्तर से निर्मित स्तूप है। जो राज्य सरकार द्वारा संरक्षित है। जिसका हाल ही में जीर्णोद्धार किया गया है। शिवपुरी जिले में सम्राट अशोक के शासन काल के इंटों के स्तूप धामना, सिलानगर, तहसील करैरा, गूडर तहसील खनियाधाना, कोटा, पाली, कोटला, टीलाकला, पवा बसई जल प्रपात के पास स्थित ग्राम राजपुर तहसील पोहरी में प्राप्त हुए है। स्तूपों के निर्माण में ईंटो का प्रयोग किया गया। ईंटों की लम्बाई 30-37 सेंटी0 चौडाई 20-21 मोटाई 5-06 सेंटी० मिलती है। धामना के स्तूपों में प्रयुक्त ईंटों की माप की लम्बाई, चौड़ाई और मोटाई क्रमश: 35x20x5 सेंटीमीटर से लेकर 37x21x6.8 सेंटीमीटर तक है। सिला नगर के स्तूपों की ईंट की लम्बाई 33 सेंटीमीटर चौड़ाई 20 सेंटीमीटर मोटाई 06 सेंटीमीटर है। गूडर के स्तूपों की ईंटों की माप की लम्बाई चौड़ाई और मोटाई क्रमश: 31x21x5.5 सेंटीमीटर है। तहसील पोहरी के राजस्व ग्राम राजपुर में बने पवा बसई के स्तूपों के नाम से विख्यात स्तूपों में प्रयुक्त ईंटों की लम्बाई 31 सेंटीमीटर चौडाई 20 सेंटीमीटर और 5.8 सेंटीमीटर मोटाई है।
