About the Book
Critical Studies on the Mahābhäşya is the outcome of a long and intensive study of the magnum opus of the master grammarian Patañjali, mainly from the textual and compa-rative points of view. Numerous matters discussed or referred to by Patañjali have been taken up, in order, and explanations, inter-pretations, correlations, parallels and, often, new or suggestive ideas have been set out on them in a most scholarly manner. The author has brought to bear on the work his mastery over Sans-krit grammar, intimate famili-arity with Vedic and post-Vedic literatures and full comprehen-sion of the nuances of Indo-Aryan lingu.stics. Seven classi-fied indices have been provided with a view to facilitate refe-rence to the extensive infor-mation and new ideas docu-mented in the studies. The volume might be said to be a veritable Bhaşya on the Mahabhaşya.
Preface
The 'Studies' now being published do not, by their very nature, form one coherent narrative and defy any general sequence in the matter of the subjects dealt with in them. Panini himself, as the adage śvanam yuvanam maghavānam aha well expresses, brings together dissimilar matters; Patañjali, besides being selective, he does not offer comments on all the Panini-Sutras but only on the Varttikas under some Sutras, diffuses them further by bringing in extraneous discussions; and I, though not so much as a 'Bhāşyakara of Patañjali' (as one disinterested friend, conversant with every word that I have written in this volume, extending over 1000 pages, remarked), have tried to carry still further this process of diffusion. This obviously means that no logical or sequential approach has been adopted for the study of the numerous things dealt with in this book.
