Book Description
Foreword

I feel great pleature in presenting the third volume of the Descriptive Catalogue of Sanskrit manuscripts preserved in the valuable Manuscript Library (containing nearly 15000 mss.) of the Ganganatha Jha Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha (formerly Ganganatha Jha Research Institute), Allahabad The work is in continuation of the previous scheme of Government of India i.e., to prepare index of manuscripts with their full details, preserved in different institutions. The work was first started under the supervision and editorship of late Mm. Umesh Mishra, the then Hon. Secretary of this Vidyapeetha. The first volume in two parts, published in 1967, contained 4593 manuscripts and the second volume in two parts, published in 1973 included 4998 manuscripts. The present volume, like the previous two volumes is prepared by V. Hanumanthachar, the Curator of the Manuscript Library of this Vidyapeeth (now retired) and Shri Jeeveshwar Jha, the Assistant Curator.

In the present volume, 2187 manuscripts are catalogued according to the previous plan, approved by the Government of India, followed in the previous volumes. It is divided into 27 major sections of the vast Sanskrit Literature, from Vedic to the Classical Sanskrit, including texts dealing with Tantra, stotra, Jyotisa, Ayurveda, Bhakti etc. manuscripts are arranged and described with serial number, accession number, title of the work, author, commentator, substance, script, size, folios, lines per page, letters per line, extent, present condition and other necessary particulars. In the Appendix "A", the beginning, the end and the colophon of some of the selected manuscripts have been given. Cross references to mss. are also made to provide help to the scholars.

The present volume has its own importance in that, it gives particulars about the important mss. belonging to period as early as the 17th Century A. D. The manuscripts are in various scripts but mostly they are in Maithili. A large collection of manuscripts are still uncatalogued which will be included in the next volume in near future.

Finally, I acknowledge with due appreciation, the devoted service of Shri V. Hanumanthachar, the Curator and Shri Jeeveshwar Jha, the Asstt. Curator in the compilation of this catalogue. I also thank the Allahabad Block Works Pvt. Ltd. for the neat and prompt execution of this volume.

Introduction

This is the third volume of the Descriptive Catalogue of Sanskrit manuscripts preserved in the Ganganatha Jha Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Allahabad, formerly Ganganatha Jha Research Institute. It is prepared under the same scheme launched by the Ministry of Education, Government of India for the publication of descriptive catalogue of manuscripts in private institutions and on the same model as the first two valumes. This volume also contains titles and description of manuscripts covering almost every branch of Sanskrit Literature beginning with Vedic Samhita. The serial numbers of manuscripts included in this volume are in contiuation of the numbers in the second volume.

When I took up the compilation of the first volume about twelve years back the institute had only 4593 manuscripts and when that volume was printed in 1967 fresh manuscripts were acquired in separate batches at different times. 4998 manuscripts were described in the second volume on the same lines as in the first volume. In the present volume 2187 manuscripts bearing on different subjects are noticed. Most of these manuscripts are not available in print and those which are known to have been printed are mentioned as such in column 11. Three appendixes are added at the end. In appendix A beginning, ending and colophon of some interesting manuscripts are given. Appendix B is the alphabetical index of all the manuscripts described in this volume and appendix C is the index of authors. Mention is made below of some noteworthy manuscripts under different subjects described in this volume.
