Foreword
I extend my heartiest congratulations to the Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) for compiling a handbook on Delhi's unique natural, cultural and living heritage.

The Heritage Education and Communication Service (HECS) was set up in 1998 and has completed 20 years. It runs a network of around 3,900 heritage clubs, trains teachers and works on campaigns and activities with schools, as well as, colleges across the country.

HECS creates heritage awareness among the youth and runs heritage clubs with the support of its over 200 chapters spread across the country. It produces a variety of resource material and publications for schools and colleges. These are used as a part of the training for teachers too. HECS's initiative of spreading INTACH's vision is further disseminated through the Young INTACH Newsletters on quarterly basis for its heritage clubs. In a fun and at the same time highly educational way, it strives to make heritage learning interesting as well as memorable.

This latest publication Dilli ki Shaan - Discover Delhi explores Delhi's heritage. It highlights the rich natural, built and living heritage of the city. It offers information on the flora and fauna of Delhi. It also discusses the many cities of Delhi, the plethora of monuments and the different arts, cultural traditions and cuisines.

I would congratulate Ms Purnima Datt, Principal Director, HECS and her team for carrying forward INTACH's mission of heritage awareness with much enthusiasm and dedication.

I wish them the very best in all their endeavours.

Introduction
Many of us think we are quite familiar with the heritage of Delhi. We know about the 'seven cities', we know of its three UNESCO World Heritage Sites and many other monuments. But there is much more to heritage than just important monuments. Old courtyard homes (havelis), or historic neighbourhoods, where people still live, such as Shahjahanabad and Mehrauli, are also heritage. It is also wrong to think that heritage has to be hundreds of years old. Some important buildings constructed just a few decades ago are heritage of the future, and we must protect them. It is also not true that heritage only consists of buildings. Crafts, arts, literature, customs, festivals, and even food, are part of a 'living' heritage. The natural landscape is also an important part of our heritage, shaped by natural forces as well as human interventions over hundreds of years.

This book tells us about the many different aspects of Delhi's heritage, and their relevance to our lives. It is also interactive, with many suggestions for fun activities and projects. Its photographs and illustrations make it a pleasure to read.
