Book Description

Foreword

In a multilingual country like India, it is essential that every linguistic group needs to foster friendship, appreciation and understanding of the people, culture and language of the other groups. NEP 2020 emphasizes the need for education through mother language. This policy will definitely improve the quality of education in India. At the same time care should be taken to prevent the tendency of becoming self centred and parochial. The best preventive measure for that is multilingualism and cross cultural interaction. In Such a scenario it is highly essential to have multilingual dictionaries such as bilingual, trilingual, quadrilingual etc. "English-Bangla-Malayalam Vocabulary" authored by Shri Dhrubajyoti Das is a work belongs to this category. It will help the Bangla language speakers to learn Malayalam and for the Malayalam mother tongue people to learn Bangla through the medium of English. It is a product of the research project undertaken at ISDL by Shri Dhrubajyoti Das. Basic.

Since this work is a dictionary of the basic vocabulary, i.e., a dictionary of words commonly used in our day to day life, it will be of immense help for one's practical needs. English words are given first, then their corresponding Bangla and Malayalam words are given. The arrangement is Subject-wise-cum-Alphabetic. Dhrubajyoti Das has covered all the important fields like stages in human life, agriculture, animals, arts, culture, birds, colours, customs and ceremony, earth and nature, flowers, food, kinship terms etc. This work "English-Bangla-Malayalam Basic Vocabulary", I am sure, will serve as a handbook not only for language learners but also for researchers.

Introduction

This monograph "English-Bangla-Malayalam Basic Vocabulary" is a trilingual dictionary of basic words. It is intended for all the non-native students of basic and advanced Bangla courses as well as Malayalam courses.

It is a dictionary of around 1860 basic words commonly used in our day-to-day life. Transliteration and phonemic transcriptions of the Bengali basic words and corresponding Malayalam words with transliteration and phonemic transcriptions are given side by side.

The words are arranged in English alphabetical order so that the non-native learners can find it easily. This book is in tabular format with total five columns. For the easy understanding of non-native learners, the first column contains the English words. In the second column the Bengali words are given in Bengali script. In the third column the pronunciations of the Bengali words are transliterated in roman script with diacritic marks. The corresponding Malayalam words are given in Malayalam script in the fourth column. The pronunciations of the Malayalam words are transliterated in roman script with diacritic marks and are entered in the fifth column.

The traditional methods are used for lexical data collection, e.g., from existing dictionaries, from selected literary works and texts and directly from the informants. No digital or machine-readable corpus or Wordnet is used as source.

The vocabulary is divided into 42 semantic subgroups for the category of Nouns and 6 grammatical types for the rest of the words other than Noun. These subgroups are in English alphabetic order. Within each category, words are also listed in English alphabetic order to make it user friendly to non-native language learners.

In this connection, it is to be pointed out that now a days in the daily parlance of the Indians, many English loan words are used. For some of them, corresponding native equivalent may be absent. But for some others native forms might be available but are rarely used. There are many examples. A few such examples are listed below: cup, bus, train, plane (aeroplane), computer, brush, school, college, TV, cinema, tank etc. Such words are treated here like other native words.
