Preface The present volume is an humble attempt to make the novels and short stories of Raja Rao intelligible to the common reader who is not expected to be intested in metaphysics and philosophy. The critical books on the novelist, available in the market, generally focus on the spiritual and philosophical aspects of his fictional works and ignore the world of men and women. An assessment of this kind tends to be narrow in perspective and fails to do justice to Raja Rao's talent for drawing a picture of humanity. In the present volume an attempt has been made to concentrate on human nature as revealed in his fiction, and on the world which is instrumental in the formation of the character of the people who appear in his works. In this study care has been taken to distance the novels from the novelist, and to prevent the evaluation of the former from being influenced by the shadow of the towering personality of the latter. But even strong intentions sometimes fail to materialise under the pressure of compulsions; Raja Rao's personality may have affected an objective assessment of his fictional writings in the present case as well. The writer sees no reason to be apologetic for something which is beyond his control. Some of the chapters of this volume are independent articles written for publication in periodicals. The writer did not consider it necessary to either modify or rewrite them, because, incidentally, the centre of attention in them also are men and women and there has been no attempt to explore the philosophical depth of the works. The writer hopes that the volume will serve as an elementary guide to the reader who is more interested in Raja Rao's fictional world than in his philosophy and metaphysics. The writer is obliged to his colleagues in the Department of English, Magadh University Bodh-Gaya, for their encouragement in completing this study. He is thankful to the publishers of this book for undertaking, in the interest of learning, a venture which has uncertain prospects in the money market.
