The author, Swapnil Pandey, who has written many books on defence lives, and who herself is an Army wife, depicts pain and pride, valour and victory, and love and care in the Army, with great sensitivity in this book titled The Force Behind the Forces. She has covered the lives of seven veer naris and their families. Each has some similarity with the others, and yet plenty of uniqueness in its portrayal of dealing with personal loss, running of the household, planning for the future, bringing up the children, and helping the wives face the realities of life. The veer nari herself needs to understand how her young offsprings would deal with the future they do not even comprehend. She is expected to be strong, caring and compassionate for the young as much as for the rest. The burden of expectations is not easy to bear.
Swapnil has managed to extract the 'real self of the veer nari, with patience and sanctity. I am confident she will continue to bring the bravery and strength of such women to her readers, in the future as well. This will help the nation to know the sacrifices of a brave woman who not only stands with her soldier in the times of peace and war, but also continues to march on if he unfortunately does not return home.
Having worked in the War Widows Association, New Delhi, for over a decade, first as Secretary and now as President, I have come across many cases where war/conflict widows have been through all kinds of difficulties yet they choose to live with great pride in the sacrifice their husbands have made. I feel a lot more should be done by the nation. My best wishes for the response this book deserves, and the empathy the reading should generate. I wish to add that I have felt each and every emotion the brave naris have been through, and would have to live with forever. May God give them strength and the ability to live a dignified life despite their biggest loss.
