Preface

The scriptures of Sanatana Dharma or Hinduism are of two classes, namely Smrithi and Sruthi. If Sruthi is meant for a select class of people like priests and ‘Bramacharya’ students for recital; Smtithi, is meant for people in the low stage of spiritual evolution who like to either read them by themselves and to others; or hear others reading them. Thereby, their emotional inclinations as well their devotional aspirations are catered to and stirred up by reading the book.

These compositions of the great Rishis are of diverse nature. In these scriptures, the spiritual truths are described in various ways like stories and incidents, dialogues and anecdotes, in a practical way, with a human touch or in a life-like background. Unlike the Sruthi scriptures, the Smrithi scriptures appeal to play significant roles in stirring up their emotions, in activating their intellect and also in energising their actions, in their spiritual march.

Presented in this book, are excerpts from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, Bhagavad Gita and the Puranas, which contain values of Dharma, eternal truths and principles of high order. An endeavour to provide young readers of today a touch of the Smrithi scriptures in a capsule form, has been ventured on the hope that they would Paid the book handy for meeting their requirements and eventually help them to ascend to the highest rugs of understanding the spiritual realms.
