Foreword
Hinduism by Ganga Somany is an illustrative introduction to this great religious tradition. With an initial attempt to define Hinduism, it goes on to encapsulate many aspects of the religion which originated in the hoary and mythical past. Though having no strict formal divisions, the book deals first with the scriptural parameters of Hinduism, the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Puranas, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata - and then with its ritualistic dimensions - the gods and goddesses and their modes of worship, the samskaras and festivals.

In the process of defining dharma, the author is able to grasp its essence with the help of Yudhishthira's.words to the Yaksha in the epic Mahabharata. 'The cave of the heart is one's conscience. What wise men have followed is tradition and heritage..... the two together constitute Dharma.' And she aptly underlines the primary importance of self realization, without which ritual becomes a futile exercise. Religion is drained of its essence when it tends to seek anchorage in externals and organizations, rather than in the inner essence of spiritual realization.

This profusely illustrated book is free from scholarly pretensions and is eminently readable and should appeal to all those, especially younger people, in India and abroad, who look for an introduction to Hinduism, the world's oldest living faith.
