In ancient times too, people kept pets but they did so mostly for using them as conveyance or protection. Washermen could not do without donkeys. Farmers and traders needed cows and bullocks for ploughing land and pulling carts. Warriors and kings needed horses to ride and pull their chariots. The stories suggest that the washermen were quite mean about feeding their donkeys. Sometimes, people had odd pets, such as the mongoose that a young couple had, or the deer that a sage (earlier a king) loved to distraction.
