Book Description
About the CD

The doyenne Gangubai Hangal was among the world’s best performing classical vocalists from the Kirana Gharana that thrived under Sawai Gangharva.

Gangubai Hangal was born in a family of musicians in 1913 at Hangal, a village in the state of Karnataka. Her mother who had a liking for the Hindustani style of music initiated her into music. Although married at an early age of sixteen, Gangu Bai’s dedication to music stayed and she continued with her training under the Sawai Gandharva. Gangu Bai also had the privilege of learning from the great luminary Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.

At a young age of twenty, Gangu Bai gave her debut performance in Mumbai where she rendered Raga Mian Ki Malhar, which remains engraved in the public memory even today. She used to relate to her audiences with her khayal singing in her deep sonorous voice, which easily got transmitted to the listeners and created a lasting impression even long after her concerts were over. In her own words “My Guruji taught us to use sur like a miser parting with his money - a graceful, subtle movement so that the listener understood the importance of the placement of each note of the raga. I believe that listening is also an art, and that a discerning audience draws out the best from an artiste.”

One of the most precious jewels of Indian classical musical Gangubai Hangal had been bestowed prestigious awards such as the Padma Bhushan in 1971, the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1973, the Tansen Award in 1984 and the Dinanath Pratishtha Award 1977.
