Book Description
About the Book
On the face of it, love and jihad are two antagonistic concepts. So it would seem ironical that a tender sentiment like love is being used by Islamic zealots as a weapon in their Jihad. This so-called love jihad waged by Muslim boys involves identifying vulnerable Hindu girls, enticing them into a relationship and finally converting them with the promise of marriage which may not always materialize. The unfortunate girls could end up as unwed mothers, drug addicts or get sold in the flesh trade. This well-planned strategy enjoys the widespread support of the Muslim community and is often bank-rolled by Islamic organizations.

About the Author
Sunila Sovani traveled to various cities and towns across India and struck conversation with the girl victims of love jihad, their parents and social activists involved in the rescue and rehabilitation of these girls. To comprehend the psyche of these girls, she sought the opinion of psychologists and psychotherapists. To understand the legal position in these matters, she met lawyers. Finally, the author examines the concept of jihad and the position of woman in Islam to understand the motivation of love jihadis.

This book, a translation from the Marathi original, should be read in particular by young girls, their parents, social activists, indeed by all those who have the welfare of Hindu society at heart.

Preface
It was in 2009 that stories of 'love jihad first started doing the rounds in the print media. A writ petition was filed in the Kerala High Court. The petitioner had alleged that 3000-4000 cases of love jihad had taken place over a period of four years. Responding to the writ petition, Honourable Justice Shashidharan Nambiar of the Kerala High Court ordered a police inquiry into this issue (The Indian Express/ DNA, 18 December 2009). The local and national press reported that Hindu and Christian girls had been ensnared, duped and converted (see Appendix 2). The electronic media too reported on the subject. The issue made me uneasy but did not become the subject of my study. Subsequent events proved that the issue was not limited to Kerala and Karnataka but was nationwide in its extent. Indeed, social media reported its spread to countries in Europe and the United States.
