Book Description

Preface

Poor much maligned mind! My mind is helter-skelter. My mind is disturbed, never at peace. I cannot concentrate my mind. My mind misled me... One often hears such complaints about mind. This mind has been made out to be some unruly devil that has occupied our interior and is devoted to spoiling our life in every which way. We have never befriended our mind, never talked to this interior friend soothingly, given it good advice, gently nudging it toward the streams of serenity that flow incessantly within us. The saint-poets of India, however, have understood its secret. They have composed and sung thousands of songs addressed to the mind soothingly and lovingly. We hope that some day a skilled poet will translate these songs in a collection perhaps titled SONGS TO THE MIND. It is the mind that has created the Shakespeares and Einsteins, Yajnavalkyas and Patanjalis of the world, the saints and rishis, and ever self-sacrificing mothers. Our purpose here is to show how this much maligned "devil's workshop" mind can be restored to its primary and pristine nature where gods play, sing and frolic. How can it show its full glory, granting us a glowing and serene personality that becomes the medium for the peace of devas, the shining ones whose bodies are made of light. This is by no means to discuss the mind in an academic style. Reading it will not make you an expert in Sankhya-Buddhist-Yoga theories of mind, nor will it make you a professional therapist. That is not its purpose. However, it points the way whereby you may make your mind a beautiful and pleasant place. Once you begin to achieve that goal, whoever enters the space of the extensions of your mind your verbal and non-verbal communications, relationships, and actions will simply want to sit in that space and gaze at the beauty of your mind, a beauty that will be exuded like fragrance in your very presence. You will be loved as all the saints and prophets of yore have been loved by uncountable millions. It is within the powers of your mind to make you such a beautiful child of divinity. May you discover that your mind was always a playground of the gods; may it ever remain so.
