Prologue
'Narcotic drugs' is a much discussed topic today. Fre-quently we get to read about narcotic drugs being seized by custom officials at airports. More and more youngsters are 'coming into its grips'. Today we face the twin problems of drug trafficking and drug abuse on a much larger scale than at any time in the past. Our country's geographic location between the major illicit supply areas of the world has added to our problems. Sandwiched between South-East Asian countries-Burma, Thailand and Laos (known as the 'Golden Triangle') and the Near and Middle East countries-Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran (known as the 'Golden Crescent'), which are the two great hubs of illicit drug trafficking, India has emerged as a major transit coun-try for the smuggling of drugs. In addition, there is Nepal in the north which is a major source of supply of marijuana and hashish in the world market

I wish to thank my friend Mr P.K.Chakraverty, Surveyor of Her Majesty's Customs at London Heathrow Airport, who encouraged me wholeheartedly during the preparation of this book. He also provided me with some valuable material appearing in the book. During my stay in London, I had an opportunity to interact with him at close quarters, and benefited greatly from his vast experience in narcotic control.
