About The Book
Remembering Bharatii Biographical Memoir of Bharat Bhushan Agarwalh Smriti ke Jharokhe Se is a path-breaking biography marking many firsts in the Hindi language. Written with the inimitable intimate knowledge of a wife, and informed with the perspective of a practiced literary critic, this biographical insight into the life of one of the first Hindi Modernist poets, one of the hallowed seven, the breakthrough literary Tar Saptak, marks a singular moment in Hindi literature. Bindu Agrawal's biography of her husband, Sahitya Akademi Award winner, Bharat Bhushan Agarwal, gives a unique insight into the contemporary literary scene even as her participation in his life makes it a significant example of life-writing. Along the way, the volume opens a fresh window to the years immediately before and after independence, since both the poet and his wife, the biographer here, were involved in the freedom struggle. Through engaging personal anecdotes, Smriti ke Jharokhe Se, the first example of biography in Hindi by a woman writer, is a fine amalgam of gentle self-deprecating humour and deep emotional investment, of dramatic narration and insightful comment. It is, therefore, a work that will interest both the expert and the lay reader. Long awaiting translation, this version invites entry into a pulsating world of intersecting dynamics of literature, culture and politics that has hitherto been inaccessible to the non-Hindi speaking world. As the first 'complete' biography by a woman writer in Hindi, it is backed by deep research into even the years that the author was not a part of the poet's life. This volume is a unique amalgamation of the memoir, biography and autobiography genres, and witnesses the cultural history of the nation in the years prior to Independence and in its formative years. It is a unique engagement with the relationship between two individuals in a domestic setting, and of the tensions that arise from the poet's political, creative, and professional being pitted against the personal.
