Ever since I was a child, my food preferences seemed to be completely different from the rest of my siblings. When they reached out for Maggi noodles, I would quietly fill my bowl with an extra helping of curd. When they piled their plates with mountains of rice, I preferred an extra helping of vegetables. I would start my day with almost a dozen pink guavas which, fortunately, for me grew year-round in our own backyard. This preference for healthy, sensible food was second nature to me, and sometimes I was the only one eating differently from my large, 20-member strong joint family. I believe that it was this preference for healthy, natural foods that safeguarded me from the usual ailments that people all around me often succumbed to. I remember one incident when I was head girl during my hostel days. I was responsible for giving out medicines to my fellow hostelers, and perhaps it was those guavas that protected me from the virus which affected the whole wing, barring me. I remained standing strong and was able to protect the undergraduates who needed me. I believed that the foods that I ate also guaranteed equanimity in my behaviour. Moreover, my natural inclination towards fibrous fruits and vegetables somehow helped me to withstand the lure of packaged food. Maybe it's my prior relationship with food that my soul remembers and has been carrying, perhaps since an eternity, but it prepared me for my future meeting with Maan Kaur. This was the reason why I was naturally attracted towards Maan and felt a strong connection with her. OMG! Yeh Mera India, is a popular show on History TV18 that brings forth hidden wonders and implausible stories of several unsung characters from different parts of the country. An episode titled '101 and running' of this show was dedicated to Maan and her life. That's when I learnt about Maan for the first time. I was fascinated by her achievements and seeing her running on the grounds of Punjabi University, Patiala literally gave me goosebumps! I was determined to meet her. Her simple yet inspiring lifestyle was enough to have my eyes well up with tears. Though I didn't share Maan's love for sports, I was in perfect sync with her passion to create awareness about the importance of a health lifestyle. That was the start of my own personal journey with Maan Kaur.
Dr Gurjit Kaur is an avid reader who discovered her passion for writing while pursuing her PhD. Her strong academic background as a Senior Research Fellow prompted her to publish numerous research articles in Human Resource Management. In addition to her research work, Dr Kaur has taught at both university and college levels. A dedicated student of Gurmat Sangeet, she is also a certified yoga teacher.
Run Dadi Run is an extraordinary tribute to the unstoppable Maan Kaur, the 105-year-old record-breaking athlete who took up running at the age of 91 and continued defying expectations with her unwavering spirit. Named Athlete of the Year at the World Masters Games in 2011, Maan's journey is a testament to resilience, courage, and the power of self-belief. Guided by her son Gurdev, a record-breaking senior athlete himself, Maan transformed her life, proving that age is no barrier when passion and determination lead the way. Inspired by a documentary, author Dr Gurjit Kaur spent a week with Maan in Patiala, documenting her daily rituals, diet, and the exercise routine. The book reveals simple yet profound habits that fuelled Maan's vitality-from refreshing kefir drinks to sprouted wheat chapatis-and her various other recipes for longevity. Dr Kaur's insights capture not only Maan's wellness secrets, but also her rich life philosophy: grounded, spiritual, and optimistic. Filled with stories of Maan's days as a nanny in the Maharaja of Patiala's palace and her memories of India's freedom struggle, Run Dadi Run draws readers into Maan's world-a world where energy, purpose, and positivity are ageless.
