Preface
Consciousness of the divine, awareness of the myth and recognition of the beauty arose at that auspicious moment, when the ancient man's aspirations transcended the limits of instinctive urges like food, sleep, etc. Perhaps many centuries had to pass, by the time these subtle higher aspirations materialized into verbal expressions. These expressions evolved into literary compositions through countless poets, who were recognized as Rșis, down a very long span. These were collectively termed as the Veda and later they were classified into Rk, Yajus, Sama and the Atharvana. Of these the Rgveda is the oldest. The divine energies that are manifest in the nature around have been evoked, described and hailed in the Rgveda. This can therefore be considered as the simplest and purest form of Nature Poetry (Prakrti Kavya). The verse running into three to four lines, seen in the later poetry are termed as Rks. Many of such Rks, depict a God and it is termed as Sūkta. Sūktas collected together is called Mandala.
