Book Description
About the Book
Gangeśa and Induction in Navya-Nyaya addresses a few questions that arise owing to some problems concerning anumana in Nyaya and other Indian philosophical systems. The validity of the knowledge arrived at through anumana is essentially dependent upon the possibility of vyapti relations. Inferential knowledge arises when a universal concomitance is ascertained. The book addresses the question of whether there is an awareness of what is called "induction" in Nyaya and then how the problem of vyapti is ascertained. Connected to these are questions like is a generalization known immediately or not, and how are vyāptis based upon generalizations? This volume thus is an attempt to find answers to all these questions through a discussion of problems concerning vyaptigraha (mode of apprehending vyāpti) such as Gangeśa saw it. It also shows how the system ultimately justifies its solutions to these problems. After finishing his studies of Oriental Philology and History at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Jan Luykx joined the MPhil programme at the Faculty of Arts, Department of Philosophy at the University of Delhi in 1981. In 1985 he joined the Belgian Foreign Service and was posted in Vienna, Copenhagen, New Delhi, Brussels and Washington DC, and as ambassador in Warsaw, Bern and New Delhi. The author has a keen interest in Indian philosophy. He is married and has three children.

Acknowledgements
This dissertation was written during my stay at University of Delhi in 1981-82. It is a great pleasure for me to thank first of all my guide at the time, Dr S.R. Bhatt, for his help in the making of this dissertation as well as for the introduction he gave me to the difficult field of Navya-Nyaya logic. I would also like to express my gratitude to late Prof. R.C. Pandeya for instructing me in the philosophy of Prācīna Nyāya. I thank Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) for publishing it, almost 36 years after it was written.

Introduction
It is a privilege to write a general introduction to this scholarly monograph by His Excellency Jan Luykx on the vexing issue of logic which has engaged thinkers both in India and the West. Inductive generalization provides the backbone for the theory of anumana which is one of the Indian models of knowing and also provides a valid ground for reasoning. In Western logic, induction has been propounded as a full-fledged system of logic in contrast to the deductive system. But that has not been the case in India. It is therefore interesting to know now that inductive generalization is arrived at in the theory of anumana propounded in Indian thought. His Excellency Luykx has discussed this issue in a comparative framework. He has profound knowledge in both Indian and Western traditions and therefore this significant work deserves the critical perusal of scholars. We at Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) feel obliged and thank His Excellency for consenting to publish this work. A general introduction to this technical subject is given herewith.
