Book Description
Foreword

The origin of the name of the language 'Konkani' has to be traced back to 'Konkan' which is the name of a distinct tract of land, by and large on the western part of the Deccan Peninsula. Konkani speaking people reside widely on the sea coast of Western India. They are concentrated in the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. In Goa it is the official language and is the main language of the state. An interesting aspect of Konkani is that, it is perhaps the only Indian language to have more number of speakers outside the state of which it is the regional language. In fact, a majority of Konkani speakers reside outside the state of Goa.

Konkani language has a rich tradition and cultural heritage. Cultural Heritage l an expression of the way of living developed by a community and passed on from generation to generation, which includes values, customs, practices, places, objects and artistic expressions. Cultural Heritage is often expressed as either intangible or tangible. As part of human activity Cultural Heritage produces tangible representations of the value systems, beliefs, traditions and lifestyles. As an essential part of culture as a whole, Cultural Heritage contains these visible and tangible traces from antiquity to the recent past.

The contribution of Konkani language to the composite culture of India is in no way inferior to that of any other regional languages of India. Its contributions in the fields of art, music, folklore, religion and philosophy are exemplary. The present book on "Some Aspects of Konkani Cultural Heritage" gives some diverse perspectives of Konkani culture and heritage. This book presents a variety of topics like History and Development of Konkani Language, Konkani Literature, Cultural Identity of Konkani People, Scientific Aspects of Konkani Cuisine, Contribution of Konkani People to National Development and Notable Aspects of Rituals in Konkani Temples.

This book is the outcome of the Seminar jointly organized by Konkani Adhyayana Peetha of Mangalore University and Sukrtindra Oriental Research Institute, Kochi. On this occasion, I appreciate the dedicated work done by the editors of this book Dr. V. Nithyanantha Bhat, Hon. Director of the Sukrtindra Oriental Research Institute, Kochi, and Dr. Jayavantha Nayak, Coordinator of Konkani Adhyayana Peeta of Mangalore University. I take this opportunity to compliment all the Contributors for their painstaking efforts in bringing out this remarkable volume. I wish this book would provide food for thought for the academicians, scholars and researchers.
