About the DVD
The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is an Autonomous Trust set up by the Government of India under Ministry of Culture. IGNCA is visualized as a centre encompassing the study and experience of all the arts - each form with its own integrity, yet within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure and cosmology.

The Regional Centre stationed in Bengaluru, established in 2001 was aimed at intensifying the Centre's studies on the art and cultural heritage of South India. RCB houses significant collections of rare manuscripts, audio-visual archives and niche library.

Svapnavasavadattam, is a fascinating play by Bhasa, a renowned Sanskrit playwright of unknown antiquity who perhaps belonged to 2 BCE. Regarded as one of the oldest and most beautiful Sanskrit plays, it tells the story of devotion and dedication, of love and beauty, of nobility and magnanimity, the value of patience and planning in life and dignity of human conduct even in times of distress. An interesting feature of this play is that it does not have a single wicked character and yet touches the deeper issues of fate and evil. Even while doing so the dignity of form and content is never lost.

The six act play is presented as a theatrical production based on Bharata's Ndtyagastra. Extensive research and creative effort by Dr.S.R.Leela and Shatavadhani Dr.R.Ganesh along with experts in the field of dance, music and theatre, has evolved into a unique module. Visualized as an effective teaching aid in the presentation of Sanskrit stage plays, it is hoped educational institutions would benefit from this effort by the scholars.
