In April of 1957, the Assistant Research Officers were directed by the Administration to collect in-formation each on one of the tribes of the Divisions they are posted in and to arrange them in booklets for the use primarily of the officers of the Administration. In compliance with this, I carried out investigations among the Tangsas of Tirap Frontier Division and this booklet is the result.
The Tangsas are a large tribe comprising a number of subtribes. They inhabit a very difficult terrain in the central part of the Division along the Indo-Burmese border. Within the time at my disposal-it was not possible for me to cover the entire area, Moreover, the composite culture of this tribe taken as a whole is a very complex one. Each subtribe inhabiting these hills, segregated in scattered valleys and hill sides, has developed individual characteristics which offer a bewildering diversity within a framework of overall uniformity. So, a booklet comprehensive even though not exhaustive on the Tangsas, embodying all the different aspects of their social, economic, religious and political life, as they obtain in the various sub-tribes, would require pro-longed and patient field research and study, which were not possible for me within the stipulated period. I was thus only able to carry out my investigations among the RonRangs, Khemsings, Mosangs, Lungris and Yoglis, who inhabit the valley watered by the Namchik and the Tirap, the two main rivers of this Division. So, the present study is restricted to these five sub-tribes only.
I have tried to present the result of my investigation in as popular a manner as possible avoiding details likely to be boring to an ordinary reader though of interest to the scientist, and I hope that this will prove of interest and use to the reader.
