The sacred syllable AUM stands for the absolute. It is uttered at the beginning and the end of most Hindu prayers. It is the original sound from which creation started; it is the path to union with the divine.

Without disturbing the essence of the syllable, the artist has depicted it in a novel way. What is there to a man but being part of the Supreme Brahman! He, therefore, transforms the ends of the syllable to be human limbs; the crescent and the dot to be the head; the rays around the head represent enlightenment. By such transformation, the artist has raised man to the status of AUM, also found in the magical formulas contained in the Vedas.

Not only does the artist convey his interpretation through line and form but through colour as well. The yellow in the foreground symbolizes bhakti, which rises to the calm blue above, stating that devotion leads to peace of mind. The syllable itself is white, containing all the colours, yet pure and sacred.
