In era gone by, women trained in music and dance were held in high regard. Courtesans, secular counterparts to devdasis, were deeply involved in the arts of music, singing and dancing, often forming the nuclei of cultivated circles.

Working in the art form of batik, where each application of wax is followed by dyeing in various colours, the craftsman has brilliantly captured the mood and form of the female playing the lute. The woman with all her devotion and emotional intensity is fully reflected here. Wearing a red choli and a green saree, which casually covers her right shoulders, she sits across legged with the instrument. The semi-circular body of the veena extends into a long neck that runs diagonally across the batiked fabric. The rich carving on the surface of the veena, the thin strings and the knobs are realistically worked upon. More than the perfection of the instrument, the artist has represented every turn of the woman's head, every gesture of her hands and energy curve of her body wonderfully. To him, it seems, woman is the most charming creation of man.
