About the DVD

Puran chand Pyarey Lal Guru Ki Waddali.

Centuries ago, the humane spirit of slam emerged from the holy land of Mecca and Medina and began interacting with different countries, religions and cultures. The Still saints, then, embarked upon journeys to foreign lands to sow the seeds of goodwill and benediction.

They showered the drops of Faith and Hope upon alien winds that calmed tine seething rivers of hatred. Meanings of plurality and otherness began to change and a new stream of loving relationships started flowing.

Those were the days when The land of Punjab welcomed the Sufis and enchanted lien. Sufis,. Pirs. Fakirs, Saints, Poets and Dervishes, too, as if they were sons of tile soil, began to eliminate the darkness around, with the radiance of their soul.

‘The tradition of deras. taklas. tilas, temples and mosques was already mere. The Sufi dargahs and Khankahs enriched it by sending out prayers t lie wellbeing of both Hindus and Moslems and old everything to infuse love among them.

In Punjab, Soil poetry was born with soft sweet lullabies of the mother tongue. Sheikh Farid Nurtured it like his own child by letting it ride on his shoulders. He gave it the power to fly beyond the frontiers path of sensitivity, Sultan Batu gave it a new identity by inculcating in it the courage to fathom the rivers of heart deeper than the sea. Bulle Shah saw through it as if with the naked eye of the Sun lifted its vell and in the name of love put it on the high pedestal of fame. All haider, Hashin and Ghulam Farid Imparted to it a grandeur that would seek blessing for all.

But with the relentless flow of time happened across the borders. If from both sides of the border a Reshma, a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan an Abida Parveen or Wadali brothers had not sustained the fraternal sentiment by transforming their inner urge and yearning into soulful music the folk spirit of East Punjab and west Punjab would have lain dormant couched in the quietude of separation.

Of course every word every nuance of the selected singing of wadali brothers compiled in the DVD produced by Doordarshan Archives resounds in our memories but seing them perform is a magical experience.

As we turn over the earlier pages of the book of time we find that their father Thakur Das ji was himself a singer of high caliber who instead of codding the 3-year old son Pooran in his lap started him in music.

But as Pooran grew the inclination to play with other children pulled him away form the world of music. The father was unwilling to grant any relaxation or concession in the sadhana of music in case Pooran wanted to run outward he would be caught by his long hair and dragged back. So one day pooran asked for one rupee from his doting and got a hair cut.
