“It seems poverty has
no right to dream”. Capturing the inner turmoil of the less fortunate, people
for whom the next meal seems like a daring thought, Dhiraj Khandelwal offers a
moving window into the harsh realities of life. The oil on canvas has a young
girl as its subject, who with her animated gaze stirs thousands of
uncomfortable questions in the mind of the onlooker.
Shades of yellow rule the canvas, creating the effect of
sunlight on a scorching summer afternoon, troubled by whose harshness, the
little girl pauses to wipe the sweat dripping from her face. Her hair has a
brown, unkempt tone whose thin strands fall in curls on the girl’s bony
shoulder. The girl wears a taveez (amulet) on her neck and a pair of bangles in
her hands. Painstaking attention to detail by the artist can be seen in the
tiny hair painted on the hand and the detailing of the thread coming undone on
the kurta of the girl. In her right hand, the little girl holds a bundle of
twigs ardently, which she must have collected for the lighting fire during the
night at her home. With a spellbinding pull, her damp and full-of-life eyes
have made this oil on canvas a tour de force. Her gaze questions the refined
sensibilities with punishing realities of life, her state is a reminder of the
injustice with which life approaches many of us, she irks the senses looking
for a haven in art. Yet, there is a striking liveliness in the eyes too. As if
the little human being is challenging the challenges of life as if she is
daring to dream!
