The Changu Narayan temple is the oldest place of worship in Nepal. It is now also the most famous amongst pilgrims and lovers of architecture alike. The painting that you see on this page is of the courtyard within the temple, the beauty of its naked stone flooring glowing in the late afternoon sun, with only a few people out and about. A couple of tourists, five monks of the temple in two groups of three and two, and a local errand boy traversing across the courtyard.

The hint of life and dynamism evens out the predominant stillness of the solemn templetops and walls and space. The rooftops of the monk’s quarters and the templetop of the main garbhagrha reflect the rays of the setting sun. A roseate glow pervades the western skies. A tall, pristine structure glimmers within the Changu Narayan temple complex. So do the walls of the monk’s quarters and the tall pillars in view.
