The following is a raw and uncompromising representation of the human figure, in what can be termed as a humble character on the fringes of society. A man smoking a chillum tries to find solace in the maddening world by pondering, sitting on a low rock. The rock has lost its craggy character here and is almost smooth, with stones on the lower half giving it a frill like appearance. Few sprigs of vegetation surround it. The man wears a dhoti and a kurta, the latter being tied at the waist with a casually tied sash. He also wears a turban with multifolds and a pair of painted slippers. The folds of the clothes defy the naturalism the artist tries hard to achieve. The clasp of his hands around the chillum and his seated posture speak of the artist's careful study of human postures and movements. The gray beard and moustaches, together with the wrinkled face, convey a troubling life-likeness, not only because of his skilful modeling but also because of the profound psychological insight of the subject. The woeful eyes and the vacant gaze tell about his troubled state of mind. The wrinkles on his forehead and those around his eyes seem definite lines instead of impressions as in the case of the folds of the clothes.
The style strikes one as being strong, self-assured, wholly comfortable in its use of type, space and convention. The figure is drawn firmly and with clarity.
