It is the almighty virtue of that which we call ‘The Great God’ Mahadeva, that Shiva, as the supreme creator, protector, and destroyer of the universe has attained the form of ‘Pashupatinath,’ and ordained a harmonious mastery over the animal kingdom. Moreover, it is in recognizing this cosmological power that the primal ‘Atman’ of the world has also attained a mastery over the animalistic zeal within the Self. This double presence of the lord – amongst the several other incarnations that texts like the Padma purana, Shiva purana, Saura purana, and the Shiva Sahasranama elaborate – makes reading this ‘panchaloha’ bronze image from Swamimalai wholly fascinating.

The work of the ‘sthapati’ in creating a lost-wax or ‘madhuchista vidhana’ image has allowed for an impressive detailing of various iconographic conventions of the Shaivite belief. The four-armed ‘chaturbhujadhari’ Shiva is draped in an animal hide with beads for jewelry across his body. The crescent moon or ‘chandrama’ adorning his elaborate headgear imparts the energies of the primal pashupatis, as well as the intoxication of soma that provides affection and ecstasy. The identifying feature of the Pashupatinath here is the galloping deer that is held in one of his left hand; the right, meanwhile, holds onto his fearsome weapon ‘parashu’ or battle-axe. The remaining hands are presented in the fear-dispelling ‘abhayamudra’ and boon-granting ‘varadamudra.’ The bronze image is seen majestically planted on a raised plinth. Along with the image of the Nataraja, the Pashupatinath has seen an enduring legacy – from Sir John Marshall’s discovery of an alleged proto-Shiva Pashupat seal at Mohenjo-Daro, to the establishment of the Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu (the oldest Hindu Temple in the city).
