Manifesting as one of the most famous Vaishnavite deities in the world that stands as the saviour of all those suffering is this ‘panchaloha’ sculptural image of Venkateshwara as Balaji, the principal deity of the Tirumala Sri Venkateshwara Temple at Tirupati. Venkateshwara’s presence at Tirupati has majorly been described in the legend of Sri Venkatachala Mahatyam, which details the descent of Vishnu towards the Earth in search of Mahalakshmi, who had taken birth as Padmavati. Meditating on the hills of Tirumala in an anthill (where Shiva and Brahma, in the form of a cow and calf come to provide milk and nurishment), Vishnu transforms into Venkateshwara, and a splendid wedding takes place in Tirupati, which is financed by Kuber. This is the site for the coming of the Tirupati temple today.

Vishnu’s image as Balaji is understood to be a ‘swayambhu’ image – that which is created on its own accord. The bronze work that we have here however, is the magnificent execution of the hands of the ‘sthapati’ from Swamimalai, who has presented an extremely graceful and ornate vision of Balaji as the ‘Moolavirat’ or ‘Dhruva Beram.’ Iconic of the central image present in Tirupati, the sculpture stands on a lotus base with two arms that are presented in the ‘varada mudra’ or boon-granting posture and the ‘katyavalambita mudra’ which allows Balaji to keep his left hand against his waist. Balaji’s image stands under a highly decorative archway that is topped with a ‘kirtimukha.’ On the top of the pillars supporting the arch, we can note two major attributes of Vishnu, the war discus ‘sudarshana chakra’ and the conch or ‘shankha.’ Moreover, we can notice the two attributes present on the shoulders of Balaji as well.

The Dhruva Bera here is adorned with waistbands, necklaces, and heavy jewellery, amongst which uniquely identifiable are the ‘yagnopavitam’ or the sacred thread that runs across his bare chest from over his left shoulder and the Kaustubham jewel in the middle, which is where Mahalaxmi is said to reside.
