In the Tamil Vaishnava tradition, Andal, one of the greatest devotees of Sri Vishnu, became the bride of the Lord at the end of her mortal life, and merged with his icon, becoming eternally one with the Supreme Lord.

Following her ascent to the heavenly Loka of Vishnu, temples in Tamil Nadu began worshipping Andal as a heavenly bride, and the statue of Andal as a youthful bride accompanied Sri Vishnu in all primary shrines.

In this large granite statue, the beautiful bride of Sri Ranganatha appears in an exquisite form, dressed in a queenly fashion with her characteristic graceful posture and the lotus with a parrot perched on it.

Carved magnificently, the hard granite embodies the physical and emotional delicateness of a devotee, whose supreme self-sacrifice at the feet of the divine has made her worthy of being worshiped alongside him.

A Divine Presence Carved in Stone

Welcome the divine into your space with this magnificent, large-scale statue, meticulously hand-carved from durable, hard granite stone. Standing at an impressive 54 inches, this sculpture embodies timeless beauty and spiritual grace. The inherent strength and resilience of granite ensure that this piece will weather the elements, making it a perfect statement for any garden, courtyard, or sacred space, enduring for generations to come. The intricate details, from the delicate jewelry adorning the figure to the flowing drapery, speak to the masterful craftsmanship involved.

The Revered Goddess Andal

This statue portrays the beloved South Indian poet and saint, Andal, also known as Goda Devi. Revered as the only female Alvar (a Tamil saint devoted to Vishnu), Andal is celebrated for her passionate devotion and her lyrical outpourings of love for Lord Vishnu. Her legendary tale involves her deep spiritual yearning and her desire to marry the divine, expressed through her poetry and devotional songs, most notably the Thiruppavai. It is said that Andal experienced divine visions of Krishna and composed verses that are still sung during the festive month of Margazhi. She is often depicted with divine attributes, reflecting her elevated spiritual status. The statue captures her serene yet powerful presence, a testament to her unique place in Hindu tradition.

Symbolism and Artistic Mastery

The artistry of this granite sculpture transcends mere representation; it is a vessel of profound symbolism. The very choice of granite, a stone known for its strength, permanence, and connection to the earth, resonates with the enduring nature of Andal's devotion. The figure's posture and attire are rendered with exceptional detail, reflecting the rich aesthetic traditions of Indian sculpture. The symbolic bird perched near her may represent freedom, a messenger, or a connection to the celestial. Each carved element, from the gentle curve of her hand to the elaborate headdress, is a testament to the sculptor's dedication and skill, bringing to life a divine feminine energy that inspires awe and devotion. This magnificent piece serves not only as a work of art but also as a focal point for contemplation and spiritual connection.
