While Sage Patanjali is popularly referred to as the founder of yoga, He had not as such ‘founded’ the discipline. Legend has it that He had traversed the length and breadth of the Indian subcontinent in the 2nd century and collated all the prevailing knowledge on yoga, the result of which great labour is the Yogasootras.

Sage Patanjali is immediately recognisable from His fusion anatomy. From the navel downwards, His is the body of a snake with tapering coils. It is symbolic of the kundalini lying at the base of the spine of man, a key concept of yoga practice. The rest of Him is a human male of superior proportions, with the hands in namaskaram mudra.

Sculpted from panchaloha, a five-iron bronze alloy unique to Swamimalai in India, this is a skilfully executed composition. The highly textured finish adds to the gravitas of the ancient Sage and the deep ochre colour finish adds to His aura.

Embodiment of Ancient Wisdom

This exquisite bronze statue captures the serene and powerful presence of Saint Patanjali, the revered sage credited with systematizing the practice of Yoga. Crafted using the ancient Madhuchista Vidhana (lost-wax) technique, a method perfected by generations of artisans in Swamimalai, this piece is a testament to the enduring legacy of Indian bronze casting. The Panchaloha composition, a sacred alloy of five metals, imbues the sculpture with both aesthetic beauty and spiritual significance, believed to possess protective and auspicious qualities.

A Glimpse of the Divine Lineage

Patanjali is an enigmatic figure, deeply woven into the spiritual fabric of India. While his exact historical period remains debated, his monumental work, the Yoga Sutras, forms the philosophical bedrock of classical Yoga. Legends surrounding him are as fascinating as his teachings. One popular narrative tells of him descending from the heavens in the form of a small, coiled snake, born from the womb of a frog, to be the son of the celestial dancer Ananta (Shesha, the cosmic serpent). This serpentine aspect is beautifully represented in this sculpture, with the sage's form gracefully transitioning into a coiled Naga, symbolizing his connection to primordial energies and his ability to shed ignorance like a snake sheds its skin. The Namaste gesture, with hands pressed together in prayer, signifies reverence, humility, and the union of spiritual energies.

The Art of Lost-Wax Casting

The creation of this statue is a meticulous process, passed down through families of master craftsmen. It begins with a precise clay model, sculpted with immense care to capture the intricate details of Patanjali's form, from the sacred markings on his forehead to the subtle folds of his garment and the powerful coils of the serpent. A thin layer of wax is then applied over this clay core. This wax layer is further detailed and embellished, and then covered with another layer of clay. Once hardened, this outer clay casing is heated, melting and draining the wax within, leaving a hollow mold. Molten bronze is then poured into this cavity. As the bronze cools and solidifies, the outer clay is broken away, revealing the finished bronze sculpture. This labor-intensive technique, known as lost-wax casting, ensures that each piece is unique, bearing the individual touch of the artisan and the subtle imperfections that speak of its handmade origin.

A Symbol of Inner Harmony

This 6-inch bronze representation of Patanjali is more than just a decorative object; it is an invitation to explore the profound depths of Yoga. It serves as a constant reminder of the path to self-discovery, mental clarity, and spiritual enlightenment. Whether placed on an altar, a meditation space, or a study, this sculpture emanates an aura of peace and wisdom, connecting the beholder to an ancient tradition dedicated to mastering the self and achieving inner harmony. It is a tangible link to a timeless philosophy that continues to inspire millions worldwide.
