This brass Shodash Upchara lamp is also known as a Nagadipa due to the presence of the Sesh Naga symbol as the center picture on the lamp. The oil basin has been removed, and the arch has five holes to accept the elongated cotton wicks soaked in oil or ghee. Following the technique, the flames are quenched instantly. The Torana is another name for the arch. During the second half of the normal sixteen-step Shodash Upchara, these lights are rotated clockwise or in the Om form. Since the 16th century Nayaka period, the image of a Prabhavali formed by light with the candle burning behind the back has been popularised.

An Auspicious Offering of Light and Sound

This exquisite brass lamp, meticulously handcrafted in India, is more than just a decorative item; it is a vessel of spiritual significance and artistic heritage. Its design is inspired by ancient traditions, embodying the protective and benevolent aspects of the serpent deity, commonly revered across various Hindu traditions. The focal point of the lamp is the striking representation of a five-hooded serpent, its hoods fanned out in a posture of watchful guardianship. This imagery is deeply rooted in Indian mythology, where serpents, particularly the cobra (Naga), are associated with cosmic energy, protection, fertility, and enlightenment. The divine serpent, Shesha, is often depicted as the couch upon which Lord Vishnu rests, symbolizing eternal consciousness and the foundation of the universe.

Symbolism and Craftsmanship

The five hoods of the serpent are particularly significant, often representing the five elements or the five directions, further emphasizing its role as a protector and a conduit of divine energy. The lamp itself, known as a "Sodash Upchar" lamp, is designed to hold an oil wick, allowing a sacred flame to burn, symbolizing the dispelling of darkness and ignorance, and the illumination of the soul. The inclusion of bells further enhances its spiritual utility. In Hindu rituals, the ringing of bells is believed to awaken deities, ward off negative energies, and create a sacred atmosphere. The intricate detailing and the warm, lustrous finish of the brass speak to the skill of the artisans who have poured their dedication into creating this piece. Each detail, from the texture on the serpent's scales to the delicate patterns on the lamp's frame, reflects centuries of artistic evolution and devotional practice.

A Sacred Addition to Your Space

This brass lamp is a perfect addition to any altar, meditation space, or home where one seeks to cultivate an atmosphere of peace, protection, and spiritual connection. Its compact size makes it versatile, fitting elegantly into various settings. As a handmade item, each lamp possesses a unique character, carrying with it the blessings and traditions of its origin. Bringing this lamp into your home is not merely acquiring an object, but inviting a piece of India's rich cultural and spiritual tapestry, a testament to the enduring power of divine symbolism and artisanal mastery. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the sacred, a beacon of light, and a resonant echo of ancient chants.
