The ferocious Devi Mahakali was captured in black marble. Like an all-absorbing vortex, Her complexion is a deep black color. The medium of marble lends to Her skin a silvery sheen; the scarlet of Her bloodthirsty mouth, with the tongue, protruding out, making for a sharp contrast.

Devi Kali is the wrathful roopa (manifestation) of the wife of Lord Shiva, and it is against adharma and the predominance of tamoguna (inertia) that She directs Her divine ferocity.

The same is conveyed through the multitudinous limbs of this murti, each of them as black as the rest of Her. Indeed She is the color of sattvaguna. A fine sense of symmetry pervades the entire composition - from the sculpted angles of Her handsome face to the lines of Her torso and the undulations of Her limbs. She is clad in nothing but a skirt of severed arms, symbolic of the karmaphala offering of Her devotees, and a garland of the heads of vanquished adharmees. The weapons in Her clutches take precedence over the gold bangles in Her wrists. The omnipotent Lord Shiva, Her husband, lies supine at Her divine feet.

5. Polishing
