Hinduism’s most widely loved deity, the baala-deva (child-deity) Lord Ganesha is a sight to behold. Like a baby He is seated on the floor with His plump little legs gathered afore Him, right where the pleats of His dhoti are spread below the navel. In each of His four hands - He is chaturbhujadhari, one possessed of four arms - He bears divine implements, one of which is of course the laddoo (anterior left hand). It is Lord Ganesha’s unflinching love for something so sweet and so nourishing that adds to His childlike persona.

A pale monotone gold characterises this murti. Lord Ganesha is seated on a multi-tiered pedestal carved with lotus petals. The same is poised upon an even wider pedestal, whose legs are but a thick network of vines curving seductively upwards to hold the murti in place. The shringar of the Lord are in keeping with the traditional iconography of the child of Shiva-Parvati: ornate crown, tattooed trunk of the elephant head, and necklaces and bracelets and anklets aplenty.

The luxuriant vine aureole adds an inimitable brilliance to this bronze composition. Indeed, the sheer proportion of vines around the murti and the style of pedestal are signature aspects of the workmanship of the South. From the throne of Lord Ganesha emerges a network of graciously curving vines in a perfectly symmetrical spread about Him. Two of His vahana, the mouse, are on either side of the throne upon those vines, while a pair of peacocks are perched on top above His crown.

The Divine Embodiment of Ganesha, Crowned by Peacocks

This exquisite bronze statue captures the benevolent deity Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles and the god of beginnings, in a pose of profound grace and majesty. Crafted with meticulous artistry from Panchaloha, a sacred alloy of five metals traditionally used in South Indian iconography, this piece embodies centuries of devotional heritage. Ganesha, with his distinctive elephant head and human form, is seated upon an ornate pedestal, his various hands holding symbolic objects that signify his divine powers and attributes. The level of detail in the casting is exceptional, from the intricate carvings on his crown and jewelry to the subtle expressions on his divine face.

The Majestic Aureole and Symbolism of the Peacock

Surrounding Ganesha is a breathtaking aureole, an elaborate and ornate frame that is itself a work of art. This magnificent halo is adorned with gracefully rendered peacocks, their majestic forms depicted with flowing feathers and regal bearing. The peacock is a creature deeply embedded in Indian mythology and spirituality. In Hinduism, the peacock is often associated with Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva and Parvati, as his vahana (mount). Its vibrant plumage is also linked to the deity of wealth, Goddess Lakshmi, and the celestial musician, Lord Krishna. The inclusion of peacocks in Ganesha's aureole can symbolize auspiciousness, beauty, and the divine unfolding of cosmic order. They create a sense of grandeur and celestial radiance, emphasizing Ganesha's supreme status. The intricate scrollwork and floral motifs that weave through the aureole further enhance its splendor, creating a visual symphony that complements the divine presence of Ganesha.
