Temple Krishna With Kirtimukha Aureole, Surrounded By Friends Beloved

This gracious temple Krishna captures the Lord in all His magnificence. He stands there with the flute to His lips, as long and slender as His handsome form. From the supple limbs crossed in characteristic fashion to the kingly crown that towers above His head, the murti is one elongated aspect of sculptural skill, applied to the subject with matchless devotion. The spiked halo, the gorgeous shringar, and the streams of fishtail sashes descending from His waist complete His chhavi, put on the signature lotus pedestal.

On one side of the Lord is a pair of His beloved cows, both mother and calf gazing upon Him with reverence. To the other, a wide-hooded snake slithers up to His pedestal. Sudama stands to one side with His feet crossed the same way as his divine friend, His stance one of pure contentment that comes from simply being next to Him. The pedestal on which the whole arrangement lies has a panel sculpted symmetrically with more upward-gazing cows. The statement-making aureole is the grandest part of this composition. It is grounded on a pair of Yalis, which betrays the South Indian origin of the handiwork. Soft, glimmering bronze in ringlets of varying thicknesses forms an arc above the Lord’s head, culminating in an overpowering Kirtimukha motif. Such a work has the power to keep away adharma from where it is enshrined, as well as establish dharma in its stead.

The Enchanting Flute of Vrindavan

This exquisite Panchaloha bronze statue captures the divine essence of Lord Krishna, the beloved deity of Vaisnavism, in a moment of pure, unadulterated bliss. Crafted in Bangalore, a city renowned for its rich artistic heritage, this masterpiece is a testament to traditional Indian craftsmanship and deep spiritual devotion. The statue depicts Krishna in his iconic pose, the Tribhanga, with his body elegantly curved as he plays his enchanting flute. The melody emanating from his instrument is said to have the power to charm all beings, from the gopis and cows of Vrindavan to the very gods in the heavens.

A Celestial Embrace

Dominating the scene is the magnificent Kirtimukha aureole, a celestial halo that signifies divine glory and protection. The Kirtimukha, often depicted as a fierce, leonine face, is here rendered with intricate detailing, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the radiant presence of the divine. Encircling Krishna, this aureole draws the viewer's gaze towards the central figure, enhancing his divine aura. The detailed carvings within the arch evoke the lush forests of Vrindavan, the sacred land where Krishna spent his childhood and youth, engaging in playful pastimes and divine leelas.

Companions on the Divine Path

To the sides of the central deity, his devoted companions are depicted, each contributing to the narrative of Krishna's earthly existence. On the left, a gentle cow and a calf stand in adoration, representing the pastoral innocence and the harmonious relationship Krishna shared with the creatures of Vrindavan. The cow, sacred in Hinduism, symbolizes nurturing and abundance, reflecting Krishna's role as the protector of the innocent. On the right, a young boy, likely a Gopala (cowherd boy) or a devoted follower, stands with reverence, perhaps a witness to Krishna's divine music or a participant in his joyful games. The base of the statue is adorned with intricately carved panels showcasing oxen pulling carts, symbolizing the prosperity and the earthly life that Krishna graced with his presence. This detailed tableau brings to life the vibrant community that surrounded Krishna, underscoring the idea that divinity is intertwined with the everyday world.
