Indian writer Giriraj Kishore received the Padma Shri from the Indian president in 2007. He was the registrar of IIT Kanpur and resided in Kanpur. In 1992, he received the Sahitya Akademi Award; in 2000, he received the Vyas Samman; and in 2002, Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University awarded him an honorary Ph.D.
