Book Description
About the Book
Each region in India has a story of resistance to tell. A story where faith triumphs over fanaticism. A story of survival. A story of transgenerational trauma, now comatose and now active and overflowing like a volcano. 1398: Bhargavi and the Mongol Storm is symbolic to each of these stories. This is a bygone retelling of the brave resistance offered by Raja Dulachand of Bhatner against Timur and the consequences thereafter. It is the saga of a Rajpurohit and his daughter protecting an ancient Vigraha from the Timurid forces, the transgenerational resonances of which are echoing in the present. It is about how the Bhatneris fought till their last breath, protecting the motherland. JW Bond and Arnold Wright highlight about the Indomitable prowess of the Bhatis of Bhatner thus, "The valor displayed by the Bhati princes in repelling successive waves of Mahomedan invasions earned for them and their descendants the title of 'Uttar Bharkinwar', that is 'the mighty portals of the north' (of India)." Events involving fictional characters are woven with the historical narration to connect the present with the past. Anecdotes from history and cultural traditions pertaining to certain regions of Bharat are interlaced throughout the contemporary yarn.

Preface
Vāsāmsi jīrņāni yathā vihāya navāni grhņāti naro'parāņi Tathā śarīrāņi vihāya jīrņānyanyāni samyāti navāni dehī Bhagavad Gita: Verse number 22, Chapter 2: "As a man casts off worn-out garments and puts on others that are new, so does the soul cast off its worn-out bodies and enter into others that are new." For over 1300 years, millions and billions of souls underwent the cycle of birth and death, continuing the fight for Dharma and the motherland Bharat. 1398: Bhargavi and the Mongol Storm is a historical chronicle set in the 14th century when Timur Lang, the ancestor of the Mughals, attacked the northern parts of India. The long-held notion that Islamic invaders over time attacked, looted, plundered India, but retreated, is a narrative given shape over decades. It's frequently claimed that they did not stay back to rule. The truth is every such invasion resulted in genocide in millions. Women were taken as sex-slaves and children as captives. They looted immense wealth and so was the incalculable devastation to property, livestock, and farmland. Lakhs of temples and heritage structures were damaged or razed to the ground. Invaluable historical manuscripts that carried in letters thousands of years of Bharat's civilizational journey were destroyed. Entire villages were set ablaze. The atrocities extended far beyond this. Yet this was never told. To quote Persian historian Firishta from History of the Rise of the Mohammedan Power in India', on the expedition of Mahmud of Ghazni in Thaneshwar, "On this occasion, the Mahomedan army brought to Ghizny 200,000 captives, and much wealth, so that the capital appeared like an Indian city, no soldier of the camp being without wealth, or without many slaves." In the same book, Firishta describes about the destruction and heinous acts committed by Mahmud of Ghazni in every Indian city that fell under his siege. For instance, he explains how Sultan Mahmud took a grueling 20 days to destroy Mathura completely. He desecrated every Vigraha and related sculptures in sight and demolished temples without mercy. He took to Ghazni all the wealth accumulated from temples and royal treasury including gold, silver, and precious gemstones. Besides killing the innocents, he set the city on fire. Few temples destroyed near Mathura were 4000 years old, which in today's date would stand at 5000! He also destroyed seven forts in and near Mathura. Awestruck by the standing majestic heritage structures and temples in India, the invaders besides destroying them, also took along with them craftsmen, architects, masons as captives.
