Book Description
About the Book
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian "science of longevity," is a holistic healing sys tem that restores internal balance, health, and a sense of well-being through consistent attention to natural lifestyle, good eating habits, and the healing power of herbs. One of the oldest systems of medicine in the world, Ayurveda emphasizes health education and the vital relationship between humankind and medicinal plants. Ayurvedic medicine views the individual as a complex whole, intimately related to the environment. The author explains how sunlight, heat, air, and water, together with animal, vegetable, and mineral substances are applied in therapy to stimulate the body's natural immunity and healing capacity. She also shows how Ayurvedic principles can help us analyze our habits to see where we may be contributing to our own health problems.

About the Author
BIRGIT HEYN is a Viennese pharmacist who became disenchanted with conventional medicine and the over-dependency of patients upon synthetic drugs. She studied Ayurveda during a period of many years with several Indian teachers and at the Hindu University of Benares. This book is a syn-thesis of her studies and continued research, providing an excellent over-view of both the science and philosophy of Indian natural healing.

Preface
The medical system presented in this book is highly likely to promote mistrust of and dissatisfaction with the sort of medicine favored by our industrial society. Naturally, the fundamental differences between the two types of therapy enable us to see with unusual clarity how important are those qualities of life that have been trampled underfoot in the onward march of our civilization. Ayurveda, one of the oldest systems of medicine known, has managed to preserve its holistic character and to treat man as a complex whole in relation to his environment. Diet and medicinal herbs are among the chief methods it employs for the maintenance or restoration of health. Perhaps it is a thankless task, in such an ecology-minded age, to expatiate once more on the great importance of plants to life on this planer; yet the fact is that we are facing a catastrophe which is not simply something that might happen tomorrow-to some extent it is with us today. Since many negative developments are now seen to be irreversible, since our woodlands are dying because of acid rain, since almost every aspect of life is threatened with a lack of natural qualities, protecting the environment has become a topical political and social issue. Nevertheless, significant improvements are undertaken only when the social consequences become unbearable, just as if the quality of life were nothing more than a question of cost effectiveness. The need for communication between man and plant, for a restoration of the harmony between people and their environment (which is taken for granted in Ayurveda), has penetrated our consciousness here in the West in a partial and rudimentary fashion. The vegetable kingdom is not indebted to man for its preservation; it is quite the reverse: without plant life man would be unable to exist. Aided by earth, water, and sunlight, plants provide us with our basic raw materials-food and oxygen. They nourish us, keep us healthy, and enable us to overcome our imbalances and diseases.
