Book Description
About the Book
Garden-city, Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore, Bengaluru - one knows it by many names. From a simple mud fort built by Kempe Gowda, Bengaluru has grown to become a bustling cosmopolitan hub. Through painstaking research and by sourcing rare photographs, Maya Jayapal has left no stone unturned to revisit history, myths, and memories. As one turns the pages one is awed by the grandeur of the palaces, the beauty of its parks, the vivid hues of its markets and much more. Quaint history blends with insightful observations as the author explores the city's monuments, those that have survived the test of time, and introduces us to its people, the diverse communities that breathe life into the city. It is not merely a nostalgic account of times past but also about what lies ahead. Bangalore: Roots and Beyond explores the allure that the city possesses for old-timers and new migrants alike, and discusses its transition into the 21st century.

Introduction
T This is a portrait of a city I fell in love with when I came to study at Mt. Carmel College in my teenage years, and which has now become my home. I have engaged with the city from multiple perspectives by talking to associates, friends and detractors, besides poring over intimate records, including letters and materials in public and private libraries. Every immigrant yearns to bring the two halves of his life together-the world of his birth and the world of his present. I feel I have achieved this in Bangalore, or Bengaluru, as it is now known, largely thanks to the ease with which the threads of past, nurturing friendships have been picked up, in A statue of Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar, ex-ruler of Mysore at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens, Bangalore addition to exchanges with new friends who, like me, were also searching for a place to call home. The people of Bangalore are tremendously tolerant, a tolerance which is currently being pushed to its limits. I have had ample evidence of this tolerance, warmth and helpfulness in my interviews with people. In fact, some friends have accused me of looking at Bangalore through rose-tinted glasses. I plead guilty. Almost everyone I approached dredged up old memories, letters and photographs. Often, I had to knock on several doors before I received a nugget of information. Inevitably, there were times when I felt frustrated and helpless. Our documentation systems need considerable improvement. Often, institutions had no documentary or photographic records. This book, of necessity, has certain parameters. Therefore, it has not been possible to include all aspects of events and, in particular, all communities. The emphasis, rather, has been on the diversity of the elements which have come together to give a special and unique meaning to the word 'Bangalorean. I hope that this book will create awareness and understanding of the city's past and present. I have used 'Bangalore' in the title and throughout the book, keeping in mind that the emphasis and narrative of the content is on the historical past, at a time when the city was called 'Bangalore'.

Foreword
Most Bangaloreans refer to their city with pride, especially after its enormous growth over the last two decades. Maya Jayapal's book testifies to both the popularity of the city and her style of presentation. She has not discarded myths as a concession to the popular refusal to subscribe to them. The ancient village named Bengaluru conveyed its cultural baggage to the new fortified town created by Kempe Gowda I in circa AD 1537. The city saw the rule of Kempe Gowda's family in the tradition of the Vijayanagara empire. Further layers of economic and cultural growth were added to this historic town by the Marathas, the Mughals, the Mysore rulers like Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, later followed by the British. Dr Francis Buchanan gives a wonderful account of the town as he saw it at the outset of British rule.
