In the wake of the Bengal Renaissance, Bengali cinema, echoing the excellence achieved in the fields of art, culture, science and related areas of creativity, has been taking newer strides.
Bengal, for that matter, Indian cinema, began its glorious journey with Hiralal Sen (1866-1917). Since then, multifarious talents from Bengal have been enriching the celluloid scenario, regionally and nationally.
Bengal thus began generating film producers, directors, technicians, playback singers and actors, all kinds of cinema craftsmen. They spread all over the country, influencing the art and business of cinema to a significant extent.
From K. L. Saigal, P. C. Barua, Kanan Devi and Bimal Roy to Satyajit and Ritwik, as well, as a bright batch of creative individuals of the recent times have taken Bengali cinema to global heights with their glorious contributions, earning universal recognition,.
An exhibition has been arranged on "Bengal In The Century Of Cinema And Beyond", on the occasion of the Kolkata International Film Festival 2013.
Ashoke Viswanathan, the noted film maker and writer of recent times, has written the text on the century of cinema since the earliest period, focusing on directors and technicians of Bengal. Some information may be missing which will be taken care of in the near future.
We hope this publication will be accepted as an important document by the innumerable connoisseurs of cinema.
