About the Book Sixteenth-century India. About the Author MOUPIA BAS U grew up in the Delhi of the 1970s and 1980s. She studied English Literature at the University of Delhi and has worked as a journalist with some of the top publications in the country. She has travelled extensively across India, exploring its rich and diverse cultural heritage and social fabric. She is the author of Khoka, The Queen's Last Salute and Anarkali and Salim: A Retelling of Mughal-e-Azam. She currently lives in Pune.

Preface Iforty-six-year-old bridge called the Purana Pul (old bridge). Constructed in 1578 by Ibrahim Qutb Shah, the six hundred feet long and thirty-six feet wide bridge stands fifty-four feet above the riverbed and has twenty-two arches. This bridge, the first to be constructed in the area that later became Hyderabad, survived even the great Musi flood of 1908. However, by the middle to late twentieth century, it was dilapidated and crumbling, in need of urgent repair.
