Bhai Vir Singh, popularly known as Father of Modern Punjabi Literature, was born at a time when the Sikh community was going through a period of renaissance. Born in 1872, Bhai Vir Singh soon became main source of inspiration and brain behind the Singh Sabha Movement.
Bhai Vir Singh's primary source of contact with the masses was through popular tracts which he produced in abundance and his major literary works had the stamp of profound scholarship. In spite of his first rate writings, he chose to remain in the background. That is why it was not until in the late years of his life that his services to literature were recognized. The Sahitya Akademi and several other literary institutions honoured him and the Government of India bestowed on him the Padma Bhushan.
Bhai Vir Singh Sahitya Sadan, a premier literary and cultural organization in the National Capital, has been publishing his works so that his message could reach the larger readers. In view of growing popularity of his writings, Sadan has decided to translate these in English and Hindi.
In connection with the 550th Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev in 2019, Sadan arranged various functions including lectures, seminars, exhibitions and Gurbani Gayan in the Rashtrapati Bhavan. On this occasion, Sadan also published a pictorial book Guru Nanak: Life and Legacy in English and translation of Puratan Janamsakhi edited by Bhai Vir Singh into Hindi and Book of Nanak by Navtej Sarna was translated from English to Punjabi. We are glad that Ms.Ramandeep Kaur has translated Bhai Vir Singh's Bhai Mardana from Punjabi to English as a labour of love. We do hope this will be read with interest by readers who are not familiar with Punjabi language.
