Rabindranath Tagore, the first Nobel Rabindra laureate from India, remains a towering figure who significantly shaped the conscience of the nation, influencing it during the national freedom movement and the post-independence era. Tagore holds the unique distinction of composing national anthems for two countries-India and Bangladesh. Additionally, his influence extends to the National Anthem of Sri Lanka, which was written by one of his disciples during his tenure at Shantiniketan.
It is ironic that nationalistic credentials of such a distinguished poet have been overshadowed by a controversy suggesting that the National Anthem of India was originally penned in honour of King George V during his visit to India in 1911. This myth needs to be debunked, and the record set straight with factual evidence and concrete references. This book aims to restore the faith and pride that the National Anthem deserves and to clear off unsubstantiated facts and maligned narratives.
As we celebrate the 75th anniversary of Republic of India, this presents an ideal opportunity to pay tribute to Tagore-a great poet, writer, and thinker, reaffirming his enduring legacy and the values he championed.
