Book Description
About the Book
BHU: From Inception to Crisis (1915-65) is an account of the first five decades of one of the foremost Indian universities. The book contextualizes its conception relative to the colonial framework of higher education and in terms of the personal background and outlook of its chief architect Madan Mohan Malaviya. It documents the conflicting and evolving visions, interpersonal drama, activism, and politics preceding the passing of the Banaras Hindu University Bill in the Imperial Legislative Council on 1 October 1915 and the struggles and efforts that characterized the institution's first three decades. Post-independence, it looks at some noteworthy events at BHU and concludes by documenting the Congress government's abortive attempt to secularize the institution by renaming it Madan Mohan Malaviya Kashi Vishwavidyalaya. The book charts BHU's course from its inception until an assault on its denominational identity provoked a major students' agitation. Alongside, it advances the idea that the university may be seen as the expression of a distinctly Indian 'dialogic modernity.

Introduction
The Birth of the Modern World, 1780-1914¹ is a T voluminous monograph authored by the late British historian C.A. Bayly (1945-2015, he taught at the University of Cambridge). As the title indicates, the book seeks to document the emergence of what we commonly refer to as 'modernity' in general parlance in its various aspects. Interestingly, as we observe, the process, in Bayly's understanding, was enabled or underpinned by colonialism. For instance, global mercantilist networks of exchange, industrialization-driven urbanism, the Western-style centralized bureaucratic state and organized religion, liberalism, and Western aesthetic values are some seminal frameworks of modernity identified by him. The world, Bayly implicitly argues, became 'modern' as Western countries forcefully brought the non-Western societies into their ambit through colonial domination and irrevocably transformed them. In other words, one might say, he seems to interpret modernity as the global spread of some Western-origin paradigms and outlooks with the colonized Asian and African 'natives' partaking in and adopting them.
