An account of the Buddhist architectural monuments and sculptures of Gujarat forms one of the important aspects of its cultural history. The monumental works of J. Burgess, H. Cousens and others still stand as standard source-books for the survey of these monuments. But a considerable number of Buddhist monuments and sculptures have come to light in Gujarat after the publication of their works. These include the valuable contributions made mainly by A. S. Gadre, M. R. Majumdar, Hiranand Shastri, H. D. Sankalia, M. G. Dixit, P. P. Pandya, U. P. Shah, R. N. Mehta, S. N. Chowdhary and J. M. Nanavati. Moreover, the Buddhist monuments and sculptures in Gujarat need a fresh survey from the standpoint of chronological sequence. The present monograph endeavours to fulfil this need. Herein I have aimed to present an uptodate survey of the extant Buddhist monuments and sculptures arranged in chronological sequence. In some cases, as for instance, in the identification Kurukulla Devi at Taranga and Ratnasambhava Buddha at Nagara, I have submitted altogether new suggestions, with due consideration of the long established views about them.
My guru, Dr. Hariprasad G. Shastri, Asstt. Director, B. J. Institute of Learning and Research, Ahemdabad, has been a source of inspiration for my work. It was at his instance that I prepared the present study, which I submitted, originally, to the 27th session of the Indian History Congress, held at Allahabad. My deep gratitude is due to Prof. R. C.
