India has an ancient and rich tradition of folk and tribal music. For centuries the folklore of India has been resounding through its Abhanga, Powada, Kajri, AlhaGayan, Pandwani, Bawl Gayan, Heer-Ranjha, Hari Katha, Burra Katha etc.
"Burra Katha" is the art of story telling accompanied by percussion instruments and cymbals. The group comprises three minstrels specially trained in family tradition. The stories narrated and the songs normally relate to heroic figures mostly of Andhra Pradesh.
The preservation of the vanishing art forms is one of the important objective of the Centre. The changing times, values and economic compulsions tend to push the traditions of art and craft into oblivion. The Centre makes efforts to revive and preserve such art forms by introducing audio visual documentation.
This year the Centre has completed the research oriented documentation of "Burra Katha" of Andhra Pradesh under the supervision of Dr. Y. P. Raju of Hyderabad and the same is embodied in Beta cassette and in this book form.
While documenting Burra Katha Dr. Y. P. Raju has collected valuable information on the subject and has gathered the same for future generation.
I am sure this document will provide necessary information about Burra Katha art form to students, artists and other interested persons in this art and will be of immense use for the development of the said folklore art.
